Sherlok Holmes

I finally saw Sherlock Holmes! The downside was it was an evening showing so more expensive but on the upside we had the entire theater to ourselves. So on to the movie itself. It was really good. I liked the dynamics between Holmes and Watson. The costumes were also pretty amazing! I was a little sad that they didn't say "The game is afoot." I did however get enough of "Don't worry I'm a doctor."

Defying Gravity

This song is Defying Gravity from Wicked and in this clip is Kristen Chenoweth and Idina Menzel at The Tony Awards.

I was thinking of the message of this song and the problems that the characters are facing. Elphaba is taking a leap, going against what everyone tells her she has to do, doing something that she wants to do without caring what everyone else thinks about her. This is one issue of the song. Then you also have the friendship between Ephaba and Glinda. They want the best for each other but they realize that theirs is not the same path.

Good vs. Evil

Yesterday in my religion class we talked about Zoroastrianism. They believe that the world is the field upon which good and evil do battle and that we each contribute to the victory of the good and the ultimate transfiguration of the world by choosing to do and be good. This discussion of good vs. evil led to the thought that there really is no evil in the world just an absence of good. The discussion of light vs. dark can be seen the same way. Darkness doesn't exist it is the absence of light. When the sun shines down on you it creates a shadow. This is created because you are blocking the suns rays. This says that darkness really is just the absence of light. So does the same reasoning stand for good vs. evil? I like to think it does. Then again I like to have an optimistic outlook on the world.

B.C. vs B.C.E

So this term I am taking an Intro to Western Religions class. It has been pretty interesting so far. It is really hard to be unbiased when it comes to religion. I think that our book and the professor are both doing an excellent job thus far.

I was doing my reading for class when I came across a sentence that used B.C.E. to refer to something that Alexander the Great had done. This started me thinking. Don't people realize that the way we count off our years is based on when Jesus Christ was born? According to this website, The use of BC and AD for numbering calendar years was invented by Dionysius Exiguus in 525 AD. His purpose was to determine the correct date for Easter under the direction of Pope St. John I.

The use of B.C. means before Christ and the use of A.D. means Anno Domini or Year of our Lord. Just because you change them to B.C.E. and C.E. doesn't mean you have changed the true meaning.
